Dramatic plantings punctuate a
garden-like community fitness path.
*Opened September 2017!* Cut off from existing parks by the 405 Freeway, unincorporated Hawthorne residents’ only recreation option was jogging along the edge of the freeway sound wall. Through a joint-use agreement a new ten block walking path was constructed on Caltrans property and will be maintained by Los Angeles County Department of Parks & Recreation. Withers and Sandgren created a recreation trail set in a lush landscape with new exercise stations and seating areas at neighborhood intersections.
The Wiseburn Walking Path showcases sustainable design with state-of-the-art solar light poles and bollards allowing safe day-or-night fitness. Colorful drifts of low-water plantings, shaded by native Coast Live Oak trees, lead to five distinctive seating areas along the half-mile fitness path, each displaying a coordinating color and plant palette.
